That's A Fact: 80% of strokes are preventable. "Get Smart about Stroke: The Latest on Stroke Prevention and Treatment"

Riverside Medical Group's free lecture series is serving up valuable health information in the food court at the Patrick Henry Mall, on the last Wednesday of each month. And the May 30th The Doctor Is In is no exception. Don't miss the chance to hear board-certified neurologist John Livingstone talk about the latest information on stroke including:
  • When every second counts: why stroke is a medical emergency
  • Personal risk factors - what you can control and what you can't
  • Are there lifestyle changes that can help prevent stroke?
  • Advanced treatments that are saving lives and improving outcomes
Walk with the Docs
To celebrate National Senior Health & Fitness Day on May 30th, join us first for a special Walk with the Docs from 7:30 am to 8:30 am. This walk gives you a chance to get some good exercise and get specific healthcare questions answered while you walk with Riverside family practice specialist Dr. Paul Evans along the measured course that Riverside has designated in the mall.

The The Doctor Is In meets at 9:00 a.m. in the Food Court (near the fireplace) of Patrick Henry Mall. Chick-fil-A provides complimentary coffee during the talk. And in addition to free coffee, Chick-fil-A also offers our Riverside community a special coupon attached below. (The coupon is only good at the Patrick Henry Mall location.) Bring a friend, family member or a neighbor and take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about a wide range of health issues and concerns.

The walk is free. The lecture is free. The coffee is free, and the results can be highly valuable for your health. Don't miss this thought-provoking series.

Parkinson's Support--Wednesday, May 23rd @ 5:30 pm ::: That's A Fact--Try to schedule travel or vacation trips after you see your doctor so that any necessary medication adjustments can be accomplished weeks BEFORE you leave. Don't start new medications or attempt to alter dosages while on vacation. Parkinson's disease gives you a new perspective on life. Share it. Be part of the Peninsula Parkinson's Support Group and come together with people who understand the challenges of managing PD as a patient, a family member or a caregiver. Remember that something you know or some coping strategy you use may make a difference in someone else's life. And something they're doing may offer new ideas and a different approach for you.

So don't miss May's meeting when Carolyn Andrews, LPN, Senior Case Manager for the Patient Advocate Foundation will lead a discussion on Travel Tips & Planning Daily Activities. Travel can be a good way to relieve stress and take a break from everyday life. May's discussion will provide good information so you can enjoy the full benefit of your leisure time and travel.

That's A Fact: Although there is still no cure for MS, effective strategies are available to modify the course of the disease, attacks, improve function and provide emotional support. In combination, these treatments enhance the quality of life for people living with MS. Support and learning for people with MS, caregivers and families

Every person with MS has a story. It's made up of challenges, accomplishments, hopes, frustrations, humor, dreams and a lot more. The MS Support Group is your chance to share that story with people who understand it - and have a story of their own. It's also an opportunity to learn new coping strategies and find out what's new in research and treatment.

Along with exchanging information with people who live some of your experiences first-hand, May's meeting will include a discussion led by Dr. Kamel Ben-Othmane on Treatment Management. Because MS is associated with a variety of symptoms and functional issues, the management of these is very important. And for each symptom, there are different treatment options. So treatment plans should be personalized for each patient and physician.

Upcoming Schedule:
  • May 22: Treatment Management - Doctor Kamel Ben-Othmane
  • June 26: Therapy for Speech & Swallowing Problems - Riverside Rehab Staff
  • July 24: No meeting, summer break
